Diwali

I viewed and participated in Diwali with the family of a Hindu friend of mine. out front the festival begins participants buy jewelry, cloths, gifts, fire crackers, and shoes. creating designs - commonly depicting spirit or the gods - from natural grind colors in verandas. These ar called rangoli and ar supposed to welcome Goddess Lakshmi to the house. In a appearance they are a means of competition and pride amongst their creators. Also, olive-sized footprints are drawn with rice flour and vermilion powder all over the house. During these days the clothes worn are usually Jhabba (kurta)-dhotis or Jhabba-legengas for the men, while the women are in saris. On the first day we took a trip to the temple to celebrate. Diwali can finalise on different days during the month of October and November depending on where the family is located. Diwali is a five day Hindu festival which occurs on the fifteenth day of Kartika. Diwali means rows of lighted lamps and the celebration is often referred to as the Festival of Lights.
