These ar called rangoli and ar supposed to welcome Goddess Lakshmi to the house. In a appearance they are a means of competition and pride amongst their creators. Also, olive-sized footprints are drawn with rice flour and vermilion powder all over the house. During these days the clothes worn are usually Jhabba (kurta)-dhotis or Jhabba-legengas for the men, while the women are in saris. On the first day we took a trip to the temple to celebrate. We also make diyas. A Diya is a small earthen lamp that is lit especially at Diwali. They are usually made of clay. Diwali can finalise on different days during the month of October and November depending on where the family is located. Diwali is a five day Hindu festival which occurs on the fifteenth day of Kartika. Diwali means rows of lighted lamps and the celebration is often referred to as the Festival of Lights. This part reminds me of Kwanza, the lights have a meaning. During this time, homes are exhaustively cleaned and windows are opened to welcome Laksmi, goddess of wealth.
