Abstract Over the years, college and practice-based fond work teachers have been expected to
help mixer work students to relate or integrate theory and practice, to transfer experience and/or to
be a reflective practitioner. This paper number 1 seeks to unpick and clarify what integrating theory and

The context
At the time of writing, the professional social work qualification in the United Kingdom is the
lambskin in Social Work. This 2-year training requires students to undertake both academic
and practice-based reading and a minimum of 130 days must be allocated to the latter in two
practice placements.
The awarding body, the Central Council for gentility and Training in Social Work
(CCETSW), is responsible for setting the competencies that offer practitioners must
have demonstrated. These practice competencies are assessed by agency-based practitioners
(practice teachers) who are withal expected to help the student to develop her/his practice.



To
these ends there is an expectancy that the practice teacher and the student will meet regularly
to review, controvert and evaluate the students work in supervision sessions.
Introduction
It is only practice which is founded on values, carried out in a skilled manner and
informed by cognition, critical outline and reflection which is competent practice
(CCETSW, 1995, p. 17).
Students must be assessed for their understanding of fellowship and theory (p. 17).
Quite what the distinction suggested here between knowledge and theory is is not clear
