2012 SATH Audit of the Implementation of the SADC Trade Protocol

Introduction

1.1Since 2007, the Southern African Trade Hub (SATH) has undertaken a series of annual patronage audits on behalf of the SADC Secretariat designed to assess progress against the commitments and obligations of SADC Member States and to propose remedial measures where necessary. During the Zambia rural visit, the SATH team sought to register the experiences that South Africa has with regards to implementing the SADC Trade Protocol. In the main the team trusted to highlight the experiences of exporters in taking advantage of the trade preferences afforded by the SADC Trade Protocol; to look back the status of tariff phase downs and the implementation of Rules of Origin (RoO); document any Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) experienced; challenges with trade facilitation instruments and other private vault of heaven constraints.

II. Zambias Trade Performance

2.1Zambias total export surgical procedure has exhibited a general upward trend over the finishing half decade. In 2011, Zambia exported products in excess of US$ 8,606,520,000 against imports of US$ 7,171,480,000 resulting in a trade balance of US$ 1,408,740,000.

2.2Overall, Zambias trade doubled between 2007 and 2011. In 2011, copper exports increased to US$6,660,210,000 from US$5,767,860,000 preserve in 2010.
